In the summer of 2009 Melissa Sorrells was hired on by University Laboratory High School to be a full time Head Certified Athletic Trainer. At University High, Sorrells oversees both LSU Athletic Training Students as well as UHS Athletic Training Students. Additionally, she teaches Sports Medicine and Health courses as a part of her duties at University High School and is the director of the Sports medicine Program.

Sorrells completed both her Master's and Bachelor's Degrees at Louisiana State University. As a Certified Graduate Assistant, Sorrells acted as the sole Certified Athletic Trainer at University High School for two years while studying to obtain a Master's of Science in Sports Management within the Kinesiology Department.

In her undergraduate years, Sorrells completed a Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Athletic Training while working with LSU's Gymnastics, Softball, and Football programs.

Currently, she is pursuing her PhD in Exercise Physiology, and is focusing her research on Elbow/UCL injuries in secondary baseball pitchers.

In addition to her role at University High School, Sorrells also operates as a Physician's Extender under LSU Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Brent Bankston, where she assists in the daily operation of the Baton Rouge Orthopedic Clinic.

Sorrells serves as the Sports Medicine Chair for LAHPERD, the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

Melissa has one son, Tyler.
